Influenced by old masters, Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700-1777) has built his work around a formidable mix of styles. From burlesque to national History and greek and latin mythology, most of his paintings have been commissioned for Versailles, Marly, Fontainebleau or l'Hôtel de Soubise by the nobility or the royal court. At the center of the approach of this artist who lived between Paris and Roma : the questionning on how to tell a story and especially how to represent an action performed at the moment. Beyond the picture of a purely ornemental artist that Natoire used to have, this book brings to the fore the new and future-oriented vision he insufflated to french art.
