The Argentine artist Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was a rebel both in her art and in her private life. Her dreamlike scenes, painted with brio and featuring powerful women, priestesses and sphinxes, play with gender roles and invite the viewer to immerse themselves in a fantastical world. Emancipation, gender, eros, death and transformation permeate her work, as does a playful use of masks, costumes and role-play.

Leonor Fini’s confident reflection on her role as an artist and as a woman is highlighted in this exhibition catalogue. Some 150 paintings, drawings and objects spanning a 70-year career showcase her unique visual language, halfway between dream, myth and theatrical staging. Numerous photographs and a detailed biography provide a deeper insight into the artist’s personality; from the very beginning, she forged an image for herself as a free-spirited and glamorous icon.
