The Nesbitt Collection is the largest private collection ever assembled of Chinese porcelain intended for export during the early decades of the 19th century. Produced at a time when the nature of trade between the East and the West was undergoing profound change, these pieces reflect the fascinating cultural exchanges that this trade inspired, with their blend of Western forms and typically Chinese decorations.
Drawing on a selection of 300 remarkable pieces from the Nesbitt Collection, this richly illustrated book explores these high-quality works, with their sumptuous glazes, which have all too often been overlooked in studies of trade with China in the 18th century. This book is the first to provide a scholarly framework for the dating and classification of these objects, and to distinguish them from the poor-quality export wares produced in the second half of the century.
