Dom Robert : moine et artiste

Nouveauté

Auteur(s) : Sophie Guérin-Gasc

Dom Robert, the religious name of Guy de Chaunac Lanzac (1907–1997), was one of the most famous tapestry designers of the 20th century. Born into a prominent aristocratic family, he initially led the life of a young artist, immersed in the cultural and intellectual circles of 1920s Paris. In 1930, he met the Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain and embarked on a spiritual journey that led him to become a Benedictine monk. He remained attached to the Abbey of Saint-Benoît d'En Calcat in the Tarn region throughout his life, even during a ten-year stay in England. Alongside his monastic life, he developed his work as a draughtsman and painter. In 1941, introduced by Jean Lurçat, he discovered the art of tapestry in Aubusson, gradually becoming an undisputed master of the craft, with unwavering success.

This monograph traces Dom Robert's exceptional dual career in religion and art. It paints a picture of a determined and endearing character, sensitive and full of humour, while highlighting a prolific body of work with a vibrant palette, reflecting a keen observation of nature. Based on extensive documentary and iconographic research, the book paints a portrait of this monk-artist and brings to light the echoes of bygone eras.
