Exhibition at the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester (MA), 22 July - 16 October 2023
During his summers in Cape Ann in the 1920s, Edward Hopper (1882-1967) first took up watercolor painting on outdoor excursions and discovered one of his favorite subjects: houses and vernacular architecture.
Through some sixty works, including twenty-eight exceptionally loaned by the Whitney Museum of American Art, this exhibition catalogue offers a fresh look at one of America's best-known and best-loved artists at a pivotal but little-known time in his life that profoundly shaped his art and career. The book also reveals the lesser-known story of the influence of a young painter, Josephine Nivison, who became not only Hopper's wife, but also the most reliable force behind his artistic confidence.
