New expanded edition

"Art is art, and a chair is a chair": for architect and furniture designer Finn Juhl (1912–1989), there was no grey area. Yet his designs often strike a delicate balance between fine art and applied art. A leading figure in the ‘golden age’ of Danish design, amplified by his commissions and collaborations in the United States – including the Good Design exhibition in Chicago and the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations headquarters in New York – Juhl played a decisive role in promoting the aesthetics and craftsmanship of Danish chairs.

The new, expanded edition of this book, first published in 2018 and reissued in 2019, tells the story of Finn Juhl, from the advent of modernism around 1930 to the heyday of cabinet-making furniture in the 1940s and 1950s, and the reappearance of his almost forgotten masterpieces in the 1990s. The new section, "Selected Presentations", highlights Juhl's most iconic designs, including his Chieftain chair and Baker sofa.
