Fortuny: Time, Space, Light

Auteur(s) : Wendy Ligon Smith

A polymath, Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) experimented with a variety of media, including electric lighting, stage design, photography, pigment development, and textile and clothing design. However, his vision as a painter, always attentive to light and colour, shaped all his artistic projects.

This book looks at Fortuny's Venetian workspaces, his clothing designs, his stage lighting inventions, and his paintings to find the unifying themes of renaissance, memory, light, magic, and secrecy that run through his vast career. The book provides historical context and visual analysis of the artist's work and examines the relationship between Fortuny and Proust, Wagnerian opera and Italian fascism.
