Built between 1912 and 1914, the mansion located at 1 East Seventieth Street on Fifth Avenue in New York City reflects the refined taste, immense wealth and unrivalled art collection of industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919). The residence reflects his initial vision of a ‘comfortable, well-appointed, simple, tasteful and unostentatious home’ and the collaboration between the patron and his team of architects, interior designers (including Sir Charles Carrick Allom and Elsie de Wolfe) and art dealers. After five years of renovations, from 2020 to 2025, the Frick Collection has returned to its famous mansion.
Richly illustrated, this book traces the history of Henry Clay Frick's iconic residence, while offering a room-by-room tour that shows the evolution of each space, from private residence to the Frick Collection. The personal and cultural significance of the mansion's interiors is explored, from the salons and boudoirs to the galleries that house masterpieces by Bellini, Fragonard, Goya, Ingres, Manet, Rembrandt, Titian, and Vermeer.
