Exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris, 10 October 2025 – 8 February 2026
American painter, sculptor and draughtsman George Condo (1957-) emerged in New York in the early 1980s and the return to figurative painting, following in the footsteps of his friends Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. He stands out for his appropriation of European styles and techniques from the past to address contemporary issues. Gifted with a quick and precise stroke, the artist produces works of rare intensity, centred on the human figure. Condo's art scrutinises the paradoxes of the human psyche and the grotesqueness of society, without resorting to popular culture hierarchies and scholarly references.
This book, both an exhibition catalogue and a monograph, traces Condo's more than four-decade career through the numerous cycles of work spanning the fields of painting, drawing and sculpture. It includes four essays expanding on the themes addressed in the exhibition, and an illustrated chronology.
