Giacometti surréaliste : des objets comme des sculptures
Auteur(s) : Laura Braverman, Thierry Putot, Katia Sowels
“I realised that I was working on a vase in exactly the same way as on my sculptures and that there was no difference between what I called a sculpture and what was an object, a vase!” Alberto Giacometti, interview with André Parinaud, 1962
In the early 1930s, Alberto Giacometti (1961-1966) worked simultaneously across two creative fields. Alongside the Surrealists, he produced enigmatic sculptures known as ‘Surrealist objects’ and, at the same time, designed decorative art objects—lamps, andirons or vases—for Jean-Michel Frank, the leading Parisian interior decorator.
This catalogue brings these two practices together, revealing connections often overlooked. It shows how closely interwoven they are, feeding one another through motifs, themes and even underlying principles of conception.
