Henry Van De Velde's La Nouvelle Maison
The Restoration: History and Rebirth of a Milestone of Modern Architecture
Auteur(s) : Guido Stegen, Thomas Föhl
La Nouvelle Maison is the fourth and final home of Henry van de Velde (1863–1957), designed for himself and his family in Tervuren, Belgium. Built in 1928 and recently restored to rigorous standards, the residence embodies the Belgian architect's mature vision of rational, human-centered design.
Drawing on archives, recently commissioned photographs, and the knowledge of renowned experts, this book traces the history of La Nouvelle Maison and reveals the architectural significance of the building as a model of European modernism. It also addresses the challenges of restoring the house to its original condition, including the search for historically accurate materials, the preservation of original woodwork and finishes, and the adaptation of the building to modern standards without compromising van de Velde's holistic vision. Essays examine the building's layout, materials, furnishings, and spatial philosophy, as well as its relationship to the surrounding garden, which was designed as an integral part of the architecture.
