The paintings of James Rosenquist (1933-2017) explore consumer culture, politics and war, among other themes, through surprising juxtapositions of powerful images, including cars, women, celebrities, food, appliances, a fighter plane and the mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb. In his work, the artist uses the techniques of billboards and the visual language of advertising.
This book sheds new light on the fascinating working processes of the American pop artist. It presents previously unpublished preparatory work by the artist - quick sketches to capture ideas, detailed studies, colour keys, base materials and photographs - alongside the iconic paintings that resulted.
