A leading figure in abstraction, Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) found inexhaustible inspiration in the presence of her dogs. Faithful companions who accompanied her between New York and Paris, via her property in Vétheuil, they were the only souls allowed into her studio when she worked there. Among them, Patou, a Breton spaniel, and Iva, a German shepherd, have been particularly important, and many of her paintings are named after her dogs.
Richly illustrated with works by the artist and archive photographs, this book opens the doors to Joan Mitchell's intimacy and gives a glimpse into her creative process.
