In 1967, Julius Baltazar (1949-) met Salvador Dali, who took him under his wing and gave him his artist name: Baltazar for the wise man, Julius in reference to Caesar. The Spanish artist introduced his protégé to literary and artistic circles. Very quickly, Julius Baltazar's painting turned towards abstraction. Through his fiery compositions and unusual colours, he created a fantastical universe rich in graphic detail. At the same time, he developed another aspect of his work: intaglio engraving, enhanced with luminous watercolour effects, which he used to serve his poet and writer friends, including Michel Butor, Guillevic, Fernando Arrabal, Michel Déon, Kenneth White and Salah Stetié...
This new monograph by Lydia Harambourg presents the life and career of Julius Balthazar, accompanied by most of his works painted on canvas.
