The Sackvilles have lived at Knole, one of Britain's great houses, for over four hundred years. The successive owners of this property, now held by the National Trust, were all representative of their times, as were the architectural and decorative features of the house, from Thomas Sackville's 17th century conversion of a dilapidated medieval manor house to a suite of early 20th century rooms designed in the Bloomsbury style.
This book by Robert Sackville-West, the thirteenth generation of the family, offers a private tour of this 'calendar house', with its legendary 365 rooms, fifty-two staircases and seven courtyards, and reveals the most significant figures in its history. Photographs by designer Ashley Hicks capture the spirit of Knole, from the state rooms, which house probably the finest collection of royal Stuart furniture in the world, to the private flats and gardens, to the labyrinth of cellars and attics.
