Marcus & Co: Three Generations of New York Jewelers

Nouveauté

Auteur(s) : Sheila Barron Smithie, Beth Carver Wees

The New York jewellery house Marcus & Co. (1892–1942) created exceptional Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces for a wealthy, art-loving elite. Innovative in its collaboration with contemporary artists and in its captivating window displays and advertisements, the company captured the imagination of families of the Gilded Age, such as the Rockefellers.

This book traces the history of Marcus & Co., from the apprenticeship in Dresden of its founder, Hermann Marcus (1828-1899), to the company's sumptuous premises on Fifth Avenue, near Tiffany and Cartier. The triumphs and tragedies of three generations of Marcus jewellers, both artistic and entrepreneurial, are presented, accompanied by reproductions of jewellery and archival drawings spanning a period of fifty years.
