Exhibition at the Petit Palais, Paris, 4 November 2025 – 22 February 2026

Like his elder Albert Edelfelt and his great friend Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Finnish painter Pekka Halonen (1865–1933) completed his training in Paris. It was with Paul Gauguin, whose pupil he became in 1893, that he found his calling and forged his ideal: to sing the praises of Finland's soul through its landscapes and ancestral traditions, and to live his art in accordance with his commitments. Coming from a peasant background, Pekka Halonen was immersed from an early age in this primitive land, whose authenticity he would strive to capture throughout his life.

Establishing himself as ‘the painter of snow’, the artist particularly excelled in depicting winter. His attachment to his native land and his love of nature led him to set up his studio, named Halosenniemi, on the shores of Lake Tuusula, 35 km from Helsinki. In this haven of peace, a community of artists was formed, where Halonen wrote his own modernity, constantly renewed in the light of the Parisian avant-garde – Japonism, Plein Air painting, Synthetism and Fauvism.

This book, both an exhibition catalogue and the first French monograph devoted to Pekka Halonen, shows his contribution to modernity through his synthesis of the various pictorial trends of the late 19th century. It brings together more than a hundred works, including a large number of sumptuous wild landscapes of Finland, from the most important public and private collections.
