Philippe Starck 1970-2000

Exhibition at the Galerie Jousse, Paris, 10–26 September 2026

Through a series of three exhibitions held between 2020 and 2025, the Galerie Jousse invited visitors to discover or rediscover the first thirty years of Philippe Starck’s (1949–) creative output, from the 1970s to the 2000s, through numerous prototypes, rare pieces and iconic furniture, as well as designs created for interiors that have become emblematic, such as Café Costes, the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York, and Jean Paul Gaultier’s boutiques.

This book brings together photographs from the exhibitions organised by the gallery, alongside archive photographs, some of which are rare or previously unpublished. It is enriched by interviews conducted by the authors with several figures who have been part of Starck’s career: Fabrice Coat for Les Bains Douches and La Cigale, Blake Woodall for the Starck Club, and Anda Andrei, a close collaborator of Ian Schrager with whom Starck has designed seven hotels. The book also looks back at his collaborations with his publishers, from his first lighting designs created with Sarah Nathan and Roger Nathan for Electrorama, to his furniture produced by Carlos Riera and his firm Disform in Barcelona, before he moved on to work with major Italian publishers such as Enrico Baleri and Enrico Astori.
