Robert Combas (1957-) gives his works on paper, based on old academic study drawings, the generic title of ‘academic tattoos’ – the artist's tattoo superimposed on the tradition of teaching drawing – thus evoking a story of transfiguration, that of tradition absorbed by the artist to reveal it in a totally reinvented form.
This book brings together a series of 50 black and white ‘academic tattoos’ created by Combas. The cover of the book is designed like a drawing pad. To close it, a leather lace is tied around the middle of the book. A long-time friend of the artist, philosopher and essayist Michel Onfray contributes an original text to the book.
