Exhibition at the Jacquemart-André Museum, Paris, 26 March – 2 August 2026

The Spanish Golden Age, regarded as the height of Spain’s power in Europe and across the world between the 16th and 18th centuries, saw the genius of great masters such as El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán and Murillo flourish. At the head of a vast colonial empire, whose political and cultural influence stretched from Europe to Asia and the Americas, the Kingdom of Spain provided fertile ground for the flourishing of a triumphant Baroque style, characterised by expressive intensity, exalted forms and a profound spirituality, particularly evident in religious painting and portraiture.

Richly illustrated, this exhibition catalogue explores the extraordinary artistic vitality of Spain during the Habsburg era. At the crossroads of the political, economic, cultural and religious upheavals of its time, it invites visitors to discover or rediscover Spanish and Latin American painting of the Golden Age through works from the collection of the Hispanic Society of America, presented in France for the first time, and to appreciate their rightful place in the grand narrative of art history.
