Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is considered one of the most influential post-impressionist artists in the history of Western art. During his short yet prolific career he routinely chose to paint from nature, developing a highly personal use of colour and brushwork directly expressing an emotional response to his subject and his inner world.

This richly-illustrated exhibition catalogue explores the wider significance of the British artists that affected him and which he in turn inspired, tracing the story from the artist's obscure years in England in the 1870s through to his iconic status from the 1950s onward.
