From 1912 to the first transatlantic crossing of the ocean liner France in early 1962, French shipping companies and shipyards enjoyed an exceptional half-century. This period saw the creation of a series of legendary ships on board which French decorative arts found an unparalleled setting. Ile-de-France (1927) and Normandie (1935) are two remarkable examples.
This book explores 50 years of decorative arts and opens up fourteen great French transatlantic ships to the public, highlighting the specific style that the greatest decorators (Arbus, Ruhlmann, Prou, Dunand, Leleu, Subes, etc.) have brought to each of them.
