Cuno Amiet : les quatre saisons

Cuno Amiet (1868–1961) is regarded as one of the pioneers of Swiss modernism, alongside Ferdinand Hodler and Giovanni Giacometti, and was a member of the artists’ group ‘Die Brücke’. In his garden, the artist studied the transformations of nature on a daily basis. There, he refined his colour palette, renewed his pictorial expression and analysed the unique atmospheric lighting of each month.

Captivating for the intensity of their colours, his landscape depictions evoke in turn the warmth of summer, the bitter cold, the splendour of blossoms and the austerity of winter, all masterfully captured in his paintings and lithographs. Throughout his seventy-year career, the annual cycle of nature served as an inexhaustible source of formal innovation, experimentation and ever-changing compositions for the Solothurn-born artist.

Through seventy paintings and works on paper, this exhibition catalogue sheds new light on an artist who remains all too little known and on his artistic language, which is as intimate as it is universal.
