Daniel Buren : Plantations, travaux in situ

Exhibition at the Musée des Impressionnismes, Giverny, 17 July – 1 November 2026

To mark the centenary of Claude Monet’s death, the Musée des Impressionnismes in Giverny has given carte blanche to Daniel Buren (1938–), one of the most internationally renowned living French artists.

Known for his ‘visual tool’ – the alternating vertical stripes of 8 and 7 cm that he has been using since 1967 in site-specific works around the world – Buren has transformed the entire museum grounds: around a hundred ‘installations’ – weather vanes with one striped side and one solid-coloured side – have been installed from the hill overlooking the museum down to the meadow, the gardens, the entrance hall and the exhibition rooms, echoing the landscape that Monet painted from the moment he arrived in Giverny. On the hill alone, 58 weather vanes in five colours form an installation visible from afar, which reshapes the perception of this landscape.

This exhibition catalogue establishes a dialogue between this original creation and the museum’s collections – Monet, Caillebotte, Bonnard, Hiramatsu – as well as with Buren’s own work, several of whose earlier pieces resonate with Monet and Impressionism.
