This book presents the remarkable interiors of sixteen British country houses, from the Middle Ages to the present day, which have helped to lay the foundations for what has become the benchmark for today's decorators, designers and architects.

The evolution of each style, from its first appearance centuries ago to the present day, is presented through sumptuous photographs from the archives of Country Life magazine. The book includes famous houses in England, Scotland and Wales - Castle Howard, Chatsworth, Strawberry Hill, Haddon Hall - as well as lesser-known gems such as Wardington Manor, Marchmont House and Lindesfarne Castle.
