Henri Quillé : Formentera

Nouveauté

Auteur(s) : Guy Bloch-Champfort, Sophie Cambrillat, Tanit Quillé

A precursor of ecological housing, Henri Quillé (1928-2018) created a unique and coherent body of work, most of which he designed on the island of Formentera, where he settled in 1972. There, Quillé studied vernacular architecture and know-how to create a collection of 35 houses, ten of which are self-sufficient or energy self-sufficient. He made extensive use of the Catalan vault, reducing the number of openings to protect against the heat, and covering the outside walls with a unique rendering. Coupled with the thoughtful use of photovoltaic and wind energy, and water recovery systems, these principles make it possible to design environmentally-friendly houses that are in tune with nature and the seasons.

Influenced by his studies at the École Boulle, he designed tables, chairs, desks and sofas, all in exotic wood, which he had made on site by a joiner/cabinetmaker whom he trained for the purpose, and which he used to furnish his homes. With architects Felix Julbe and Raimon Torres, he collaborated on the regulatory plan and planning work for the island of Formentera from 1973 to 1976.

Richly illustrated with plans and period and contemporary photographs, this first monograph devoted to Henri Quillé reveals the work of a free-spirited architect who is more than ever in tune with our times.
