René Magritte's (1898-1967) paintings of clouds, hats, pipes and apples are among the most recognisable images of Surrealism. Renowned for his impassive realist style, the Belgian artist depicted ordinary objects and everyday settings, revealing them to be more mysterious and enchanting than we could ever have imagined.
This catalogue of the first retrospective devoted to Magritte in Australia brings together more than 100 works by the artist, most of which have never been seen in Australia. It ranges from his early avant-garde explorations and commercial works in the 1920s, to his revolutionary contributions to Surrealism, his startling provocations of the 1940s and the celebrated paintings of his later years.
