Knowledge of the methods of shaping and decorating objects is subject to growing interest: the world of metals is especially rich in this area and their identification is now part of any work of study, description and enhancement of heritage.

This vocabulary establishes the specific language of metal techniques applied to art objects, ethnographic objects and architectural elements. The processes defined cover a period from Antiquity to the industrial era and concern goldsmithing, jewellery, pewter pottery, foundry, brassware and ironwork. All metals, whether used structurally or as a covering, are considered.

With this book, the history of techniques joins the history of the decorative arts.
