Picabia, Méditerranée

A central figure in international artistic circles, Francis Picabia (1879–1953) played a major role in the history of the early 20th-century avant-garde. Inspired by his stays in Barcelona and the south of France, the artist developed a unique artistic language, ranging from his abstract and mechanical works to his Espagnoles and Transparences.

This exhibition catalogue traces Picabia’s Mediterranean journeys between Catalonia and the Côte d’Azur, exploring in particular the role played by Iberian culture in his work and that of his contemporaries. It brings together works by Marie Laurencin, Marcel Duchamp, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Man Ray, Juliette Roche, Albert Gleizes, Hélène Grünhoff, Pablo Picasso, Olga Sacharoff, Kees van Dongen, Natalia Goncharova, Joan Miró, Serge Charchoune, Henri Goetz and Christine Boumeester – all leading figures of the 20th-century avant-garde.
