After studying stage design and gestural semiology, Pierre Sala (1948-1989) began producing theatre at the age of 20. What followed was an exciting adventure in which he worked both as author and stage manager. Often without words, the theatre he promoted was experimental, visual and sensory.

Sala entered the 1980s with a strong desire to express himself as a furniture designer. The Piranha chair, emblematic of his first collection, was an immediate success. Three years later, the Clairefontaine desk notebook established him on the international design scene. Until 1988, Pierre Sala enjoyed designing collections full of fantasy. Alongside this aesthetic quest, he took on commissions as an interior designer, bringing his innovative eye to bear on the design of bars, restaurants and other public and private spaces. When he died in 1989, in his fortieth year, he left behind a number of projects in the form of prototypes or ideas.

This monograph - the first to be devoted to Pierre Sala - traces the career of this iconoclastic artist and seeks to bring his creations to life in all their richness and diversity.
