Woven portraiture, portrait in tapestry: the association of the two terms is unexpected and would be the forced meeting of a genre oriented towards naturalistic description and a visual medium characterised by decorative and utilitarian principles.

This book brings together the circumstances and factors that explain why tapestry was adopted as a medium for portraiture over the centuries. The case studies in this volume evoke several of the significant stages in the development of woven portraiture from the late Middle Ages to the interwar period.
