Richard Prince
Auteur(s) : Walter Moser (dir.)
Exhibition at the Albertina, Vienna, 17 April – 16 August 2026
One of the most renowned artists of our time, Richard Prince (1949) rephotographs the famous cowboy from cigarette adverts with humour and provocation, placing him in a new context. Through his appropriations of advertising images, the American painter and photographer has been a controversial figure since the 1970s, and his subjects, drawn from the mass media, reveal the visual communication codes of consumer culture.
This exhibition catalogue presents a comprehensive retrospective of Prince’s work. It focuses on his photographic work, but also features other media such as installations, drawings and paintings. Iconic works by Richard Prince, notably his ‘Cowboys’ and ‘Fashion’ series, are brought together alongside rarely exhibited and previously unseen pieces.
