European sculpture in the collection of His Majesty the King

Nouveauté

Auteur(s) : Jonathan Marsden

This four-volume publication marks the culmination of one of the most ambitious stages in the vast project to catalogue the sculptures in the British Royal Collection. Covering sculptures of all types from the 15th to the late 20th century, it includes countless new attributions and identifications, as well as the results of conservation and scientific examinations.

Among the highlights are an exceptional collection of Italian and Northern Renaissance bronze busts, the first bronze casts of ancient sculptures made in Britain, the finest collection of 17th- and 18th-century French bronzes outside France, unrivalled examples of English portrait sculpture from the 17th century onwards, and the most comprehensive collection of Victorian sculpture in existence today.

This study includes an introduction covering the relationship between British monarchs and sculptors since the 17th century and the impact of sculpture on the interiors of royal palaces during the same period, and is accompanied by nearly 2,000 illustrations, most of which were commissioned especially for this book.
