In 18th-century France, painting and love were closely connected. From the end of Louis XIV's reign to the eve of the French Revolution, the most brilliant painters - Watteau, Boucher, Lancret, de Troy, Greuze and Fragonard - concentrate their skills to amorous inspiration.

This book analyses the great pictural expressions of love as they were manifested in the 18th century: Watteau's exquisite and ambiguous chivalry, Boucher and de Troy's social and hedonist pleasure, the libertine illustrators' saucy - sometimes obscene - ambiguity, Baudouin's satirical verve, Greuze's marital fervour, and finally Fragonard tender or passionate sensuality.
