This book is dedicated to Lucie Rie (1902–1995), one of the leading ceramic artists of the 20th century alongside Hans Coper, and a leading figure in this new form of ceramic art that broke free from tradition.
Based in the small studio at Albion Mews – which went on to become famous – near Hyde Park in London, she worked there from 1939 to 1990. She began producing porcelain in 1949 and remained faithful to the potter’s wheel and the electric kiln. She reinvented simple techniques – sgraffito and nériage – which she perfected to the highest standard.
