Théo Tobiasse : Catalogue Raisonné

Nouveauté

Auteur(s) : Catherine Faust-Tobiasse, Caroline Rivalan (dir.)

Born in Jaffa to a family originally from Lithuania, Théo Tobiasse (1927–2012) arrived in Paris in 1931 and lived there in hiding during the Second World War to escape Nazi persecution. After the Liberation, he began a career as a graphic designer and also created tapestries and theatre sets, as well as working for Hermès. From 1961 onwards, he devoted himself entirely to his art.

Tobiasse drew inspiration from surrealism, expressionism and modern primitivism, and explored several techniques. His subjects were literary, often biblical, sometimes erotic. Combining dreams, mythology and his own past, his art transcended history, offering rich metaphors for the modern world.

This catalogue raisonné brings together nearly 6,000 works, painted on canvas, cardboard or paper, created between 1958 and 2012, allowing us to discover this prolific body of work, often extended by his ‘pictorial words’, which spanned the century by addressing the timeless themes of exile, women and the Bible.
